Google says that if it is to change the names of Mexico and Denali’s Gulf on its map, it will take its cue from the US government.
The company said on Monday that it would only change when the government updates its official listing for water and mountain bodies.
After assuming office, President Donald Trump ordered that the water bounded by the Southern United States, Mexico and Cuba was renamed in the Gulf of the US. He also ordered that America’s highest mountain peak be replaced back into Mount McNlay.
Google said in a post on X, “We have a long practice of implementing name changes when updated to official government sources.”
The company said that the database of more than 1 million geographical features in the United States will reflect any update of the geographical name information system in the United States.
“When this happens, we will quickly update Google maps in the US to show Mount McCinley and America to show the Gulf of America,” said Google.
“Denali” is the favorite name of the mountain for Alaska native. Former President Barack Obama replaced it in 2015 with his previous name “McCinley”, a tribute to President William McCinley, nominated by a Golden Prosector in the late 19th century.
Associated Press, which provides news to many audiences worldwide, will mention the Gulf of Mexico by its original name, which he has done for 400 years, while accepting the Gulf of America’s name.
However, AP will use Mount McKinley name instead of Denali; The region is completely in the United States and as the President, Trump has the right to change federal geographical names within the country.
