Review: In ‘Frida … A Self Portrait’ at Writors Theater, an actress tries to become a painter

Despite the title suggestions, the 20th-century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is not as a self-portator of this painter, iconic 20th-century Mexican artist about Vanessa Severo’s self-paid solo show in Writers Theater in Vanessa Severo. Question.

And, clearly, the work is in its best form when it is clear about that purpose, and less effective when Severo leaves his own personality.

In today’s non -profit theater, there is a lot of unnecessary concern about whose right to tell. In the show, an effective tour that is played in the park and other places in the Cincinnati Playhouse and went next to the Milwauki Repertary Theater, we have a white director in Joni Shulat and an actress who is from Brazil. The show is, of course, one of the greatest Mexican artists ever. Argo, a possible problem to close near.

I suspect that Kahlo must have given himself a shame about anyone. Severo is an excellent artist and you do not require a general nationality to play the role of Kahlo, even though Severo seems to worry, despite receiving a striking physical equality for his subject. Nevertheless, the issue is reversed, because Severo holds his show right by discussing his own life and physical challenges and, originally, her discovery for the essence of Kahlo, a woman who is a woman who important physical and psychological Also lived through challenges. “We shared a lot,” says Severo, “I am forgetting that we are two different people.”

I liked that part of this physically stylish and quite elegant show and director Shults cleverly integrated it with self-depiction with the famous passion of Kahlo. (Kahlo portrayed more than 50 self-paintings, which often shows what was going on in his body and psyche; one of his one-third of his artistic works was depicted himself.)

I have some warnings: at some points, Severo says that he said “anything or nothing” in any previous performance of his show. But then it does not seem true, until I do not improve much more than feeling. I think an incredible narrator has to be an argument to swim, but my idea is that Severo should live with truth about himself and his subject. Belief in biography matters.

This is less effective when Severo considers Kahlo’s cover to someone else. Apparently, she did not meet Kahlo herself, but she still fights with the frame she sets in the beginning. If it is an individual piece, it should remain the whole time. it has to be done.

Even though this show has been done many times, it strikes me as a work of progress with a talented performance artist, which is not sufficient to do the show she really wants to do. I say go for the approach that is the most unique; There are many other Kahllo investigations and it was enjoyed by a performance by the audience of the Writers Theater, who were rushed to the performance of me, two formidable Latina women from different times and places should not be afraid of having complete images.
